Classroom Music

The Classroom Music Programme at St Columba’s is informed by the Australian Curriculum Arts syllabus.

An aural approach is at the heart of the programme at our school.  This approach places great emphasis on the child using their natural instrument, the singing voice, and encourages children to ‘think in sound’.  The Music Teachers help children to learn about music through their active involvement in music-making.

Children have the opportunity to be involved in the school’s Choral Programme. Students in Year 4 are welcome to join the Junior Choir, while children from Years 5 and 6 form the Senior Choir. St Columba's values the children's participation in the choral programme, so weekly 30 minute rehearsals are scheduled within school hours.

Both ensembles are non-auditioned and there is a strong emphasis on developing musical skills, working as a team, fostering new friendships and the sense of achievement that comes with performance.  Performances planned for the choirs include our Anzac Day Ceremony, school assemblies and functions, workshops, liturgies, Queensland (Catholic) Colleges' Music Festival, end-of-year Christmas Concert and Senior Graduation.
